January 9th - 16th 2013

1/9/2013

I had to go to school today. I do want to take a minute to say that in America I was a straight A student with an almost perfect attendance. Now, I dread going to school. I showed up today and it was raining. This might sound like a bummer... "OH, your school is outside and you are wearing a white shirt that you have to wear three days in a row, rain must be the worst thing ever." it is actually a great start to the day "Yippee!!! No morning ceremony because it is raining!!!" So while I was celebrating the fact that I would not be having the terrible morning ceremony, I walked up the wet stairs to my first class (the stairs aren't covered so I had to walk up in the rain, luckily it was only drizzling). When I got to my normal classroom I didn't recognize anyone but, I was very early so I thought maybe my friends were just running a little late. I sat in the back of the classroom and waited but after a while it became obvious that this was not my English class. I packed up my stuff and went to walk out of the door. Rude classmates yelled at me asking me where I was going. I tried to open the door but it wouldn't budge. I then realized that there was a boy sitting in front of the door so that no one could get out. I gave the door a shove, I hope I hurt his back and then I waited for him to move. The rest of the class was laughing hysterically. When the boy moved, he moved because I put in my pissed of American girl who is twice as big as you and could beat the crap out of you if you were worth her time on, I stormed out of the classroom and did not look back to the jeers and rude comments. Some Indonesians at my school wonder why I do not talk to everyone. This is exactly why most of the people at my school are terrible people that enjoy making fun of me. True, I have a lot of very nice friends but still the majority of the people in the school are total idiots. There is a reason why only some parts of Indonesia have good tourism, most Indonesians do not know how to act around white people (the answer is no differently, we are not aliens). I didn't know where my English class had relocated to and I was not in the mood to try and find out. I went to the library, which is now my favorite place in the school. I sat in my favorite seat, got out my computer and wasted time until my math class started (several hours later). One of the teachers came up to me and we had a very long conversation in Indonesian. I showed him pictures of Florida and my family and he asked many questions. See, some people are very nice. After a while he left and I was on my own again. Before my math class started I went and bought a tiny bag of popcorn as a snack and then I headed off to the room. On the way I met some of my classmates and they told me not to go in the class yet, we waited together for another class to finish so that we could have our classroom. About 15 minutes after class should have started our teacher found us waiting and told us that we wouldn't have class today. I was looking forward to actually having a class, I should have known better. I talked to my friends for a while longer and then they told me that they wanted to go home because they didn't have any more classes. I said goodbye and headed back to the library. I was in the library for a little while when I remembered that my host mom told me to go to my first host family if school ended early because she would not be able to come and get me. I walked to my first host family's house, on the way I bought some snacks to eat. At their house I watched a movie and ate my snacks. After I finished my movie my host mom showed up and drove me home. Another interesting thing that happened today was that I realized that more than half of the school is under construction. Now two hallways have been completely destroyed. I don't know when the school will be put together but I can only imagine that the lack of classrooms will continue to complicate my school life.

I enjoyed my movie afternoon. I got my hands on Mr. Potatoes (Like Pringles but cheaper and better) and roasted peanuts and I watched Premium Rush. The movie was good, or I was really tired and I seemed better than it really was (no promises). And after my movie finished I watched a little bit of cake boss, which is always fun.

I had to wake up extra early today (5 am) because I had to take a shower.  I got up, took my cold shower, got dressed in my school uniform and was almost ready for the day when I got a text from Aunt Melly saying "I am going to Jakarta today with Herly (her son who was an exchange student to Florida) and Leti for a Rotary conference. Do you want to come, we will come back home Sunday." I talked to my host mom and she said that I could so I told Aunt Melly that I wanted to go. But then my host mom got a call from my first host family saying that they were going to have a huge party for my first host mom's parent's 50th wedding anniversary and that the party would be on Sunday. After a lot of confusion, arguing and guilt tripping I told Aunt Melly that I would not be able to go to Jakarta. At this point, it was 7 and I was already late for school. My mom asked me if I wanted to go to school and let me stay home when I said no. I went back to bed after unpacking all of my stuff that I was going to take to Jakarta. A couple of hours latter my host mom woke me up and told me that we should go buy a dress because the party was going to be very formal. We went to a store and stayed there for about 10 minutes. My host mom said she just wanted to get some ideas before we had a dress made. On the way, I found out that the "party color" was gold and that I would be expected to wear a golden dress. We went to buy fabric and I convinced my host mom not to make me buy a completely golden dress. Instead I bought a dark red fabric and a golden lace-fabric that would go over the red. It cost 19 dollars in fabric because the lace was very expensive. We went to the tailor and explained what I wanted. She took measurements and told us to come back for a fitting on Saturday morning. We went back home and I relaxed, hoping that my dress would turn out ok. When Izzati  got home my host mom decided to tell me that my hair did not look good the way it was and that I should get a haircut. Indonesians are obsessed with bangs and layer, neither of which look good on me. After at least an hour of insistent begging I consented. I got a cream-bath (hair treatment where they rub cups of conditioner into your hair) and a haircut. I was able to limit the layers to the bottom three inches of my hair. After it all, my hair looked fine. I really didn't hate it, I just still don't understand why I should have changed my hair in the first place. My host mom told me that it look mostly the same but that it looked "better". While I was driving with my host mom all around town today we talked about how bad the education system in Indonesia is and how many people need to be able to speak English to have a job. She expressed concern for the students at my school because they were never really given a chance. She said that I should start a club and inspire all of the students at my school. I think it is a lot of pressure to teach.

I figure if I go to school every other day that is pretty good. Unfortunately, today was the day I actually had to go to school.  When I got to school I went to my class and picked a seat. After a couple for minutes the school bell started ringing and it would not stop. The bell is already annoying and very loud but today it played on repeat for at least three minutes. Even my classmates were wondering what was going on. We headed downstairs for the morning ceremony and got in line. The ceremony lasted about five minutes. The teacher dismissed us almost as soon as we got lined up properly. When I got back upstairs my seat had been taken and I was the last one in the classroom, which means all of the good chairs were taken and I had to use a broken chair with no back. The teacher did come and I think he actually taught a lesson but, I can't follow the class because it is web design and I know nothing about it in English let alone in Indonesian. I sat quietly in my seat playing on my computer until the teacher left and the students started trickling out. When I was one of the last people in the classroom I relocated to the library. After a couple of minutes I realized that I was hungry and I went to buy some food. I ordered something called Seblak, which is a scrambled egg, macaroni noodles, ramen-like noodles, chili sauce, water and come kind of chip thing. I had never tried it before because I get nervous ordering food by myself that I have never tried before from street vendors. I was so good. I loved every bite and I will defiantly be ordering it again. For 30 cents it is a pretty good lunch. Shortly after that my host mom texted me and told me that she was at the school and that I could come home now. I got in the car and she told me about how she talked with the extra-curricular coordinator at my school about me teaching an English club. We drove to a restaurant and that Mie Ayam Manis, sweet noodles with chicken in it. It was delicious. After lunch we went home.

I love when trying new things pays off. It makes me feel like I am doing something right with my exchange.

I knew that I wasn't going to school today because I had to go to my dress fitting. I was very nervous, I had no idea if the dress was going to work or if it was going to be terrible. We walked into the tailor and I saw the dress, it was absolutely beautiful. I put it on and it fit pretty well except for a couple minor things which I told the tailor I wanted changed. I talked to my host mom a lot today about her exchange experience (she went to America, two of her daughters went to America one of her daughters went to the Netherlands and her husband did some college in England.. everyone in the family have been exchange students - not all of them through Rotary). She gave me some suggestions about how I should live my exchange. Later in the day we went back to get my dress for the final time. (I don't know if I mentioned that the tailor only cost 10 dollars) It was perfect. It fit me great and I am excited to wear it. To celebrate my host mom and I went to giggle box, I ordered a cheese burger and it was really good.

I spent the morning packing. I am spending the next week at my first host family's house because my host mom is going out of town and I will not have a ride to school. After I get home, I will have one day to pack up all of my stuff and I will move to my 3rd host family. I do not know my 3rd family yet and it is always a nerve-racking experience to move to another house. I got dressed for church, loaded the car with my stuff and then my host mom took me to church. I was only able to stay for an hour and then I was going to my first host grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary party. I forgot something that I needed at home so we went home, I got my stuff and changed into my new party dress. The dress is very pretty and I am glad that my first experience with the tailor was a success. I had not been to a really big Indonesian party before this party. The street in front of the house had been shut down and there was a canopy covering the street and the 100 chairs that sat there in shade. I went upstairs to drop off my stuff and say hello to my family. I was told that the 'color' of the party was gold and that all of the family would be wearing it... this was not exactly true. My grandma and mother were wearing gold, all of the men in the program were wearing black shirts with gold ties and the girls were all wearing white dresses with gold trimmings. There was gold, but I did not exactly match the family. Diandra was wearing a big princess dress with 5 inch heels (so if she is the same height as I am in the pictures, just know that she was cheating). Everything was beautiful, the whole house was decorated. The house was full of people (at least 70 people). The program was very cute the grandchildren and children all walked down the stairs leading grandma and grandpa. Many people talked. When Kevin (my brother who lives in Jakarta who is afraid to talk to me) got up to talk I cheered for him and screamed his name (much to his embarrassment). The couple was so cute, grandpa cried and they did some traditional things. They cut a piece of cake fed it to each other and then fed it to the oldest member of the family (I think it is grandpa's mom), to show respect. They also took a cooked piece chicken and they both grabbed a side to see who got the bigger piece. Grandpa lost. I talked to lots of people, ate lots of food and was told to eat more food. They had hired a piano player and a dance teacher, so I spent some time learning a dance with the other kids. Many people wanted me to sing and yelled at me when I didn't want to but, when I looked at the songs they were all oldies and I didn't know any of them. I told everyone I did not know any of the songs because they were too old, they still were not happy. There was one man, an uncle maybe, who kept telling me I had to sing, I explained again and again why I did not want to. Finally, I lost patience and told him that I would sing if he sang a song first. He said that he couldn't and that he did not want to sing... really? At least he left me alone after that. (I have now won several arguments in Indonesian) When most of the family left there was still a lot of close family and the kids all played games together. They told me that they wanted to play hide and seek so, I said yes. This was NOT hide and go seek it is called '25' in Indonesian and I could not figure out the rules, it did not seem to have any. I lost the first round and then watched trying to figure out the rules. Then we played freeze tag and Jenga (that game with the wooden blocks that you try to remove without making the whole tower collapse). Eventually, everyone had to go home. I was so tired. Nothing tires me out like talking to people and participating in a party. It is also hard to explain to your host family that you avoid parties because you do not like them and that you haven't had a large birthday party since 4th grade. Actually, one of my new year's resolutions is to go out more often, if I was given the choice I would stay in my room all day or hang out with one or two friends at a time.

Totally forgot to set my alarm. I woke up at 6:10 got dressed, ran downstairs and no one was there. I didn't know where anyone was and I was already late so school so I went back upstairs and changed into my PJs again and went back to bed. My maid apparently did not remember that I was staying at the house until about 10, when she told me I need to eat breakfast. I spent the day relaxing and catching up on college things. For lunch I walked to the Indomart and bought some snacks and I got an Avocado juice. At dinner I ate everything on the table that I recognized but, I was still hungry so I ate this meat thing. I totally thought it was good corned beef, I ate a couple of pieces. The next day, I found out that I ate cow tongue, it was pretty good.

No school!

1/15/2013
Back to school today. When I got to school no one was there. It was raining and everyone was running late. I had culture class first and it took half the class for everyone to show up. While we were waiting my friends were complaining about how cold it was. One of my friends asked if America or Indonesia is colder. If anyone was confused America is much colder, even if Florida does not get snow it is still colder. The lowest temperature I have ever had was 60 degrees because we were very high up in a mountain and it was raining. Normally it doesn't get colder than 80 degrees. After culture I should have had Indonesian class. I talked to one of my friends in that class and she said it was moved to 2pm. So I went to the library and spent some time in there. My last class of the day was digital drawing. I actually learned something today! It is always exciting when I can figure something out on Photoshop. I couldn't go to Indonesian because I was still in my other class. Before I left school I bought seblak, the spicy macaroni and egg thing. I almost ran home because I did not want my food to get cold (had to go home because I only had a little bit of water).  I ate my lunch and took a nap. When I woke up I was cramping really bad and I spent an hour cradling a hot water bottle. I was half way through my Seminary class when my maid told me that I needed to come to dinner. I was not looking forward to it. I still was not feeling good. But, the best thing happened. We had Indo Mie for dinner (basically spicy ramen noodles). I ate my whole bowl and had to ask my maid to make me another serving. It was so good.

INDO MIE!! BEST THING EVER!!! I am defiantly bringing some home and I am never going to eat ramen without chili in it from now on.

1/16/2013

Ok, two days of school in a row. This is a record. I feel like I should get an award every time I decide to get out of bed in the morning. Got to school and waited. We had a morning ceremony but, it was not long. I should have had English class today but my class is still M.I.A. I have no idea where to look for my class and as I learned in my first month at school, neither does anyone else. Back in the library. A teacher came up to me and we talked for a little bit. It is funny, recently people keep coming up to me and asking "So, Alaina are you fluent in Indonesian yet?" (in Indonesian) and when I respond that I know a "little Indonesian they look disappointed and walk away". Another funny thing is that when I say I speak some Indonesian people do not know how to talk to me so they just stare at me and it seems like they want me to read their minds. I have a better chance of understanding what you want me to know if you say something, anything. I really don't know what you are thinking if you just look at me. I am so sorry to disappoint everyone. Rest of the day was normal.. nothing too exciting.

Winter Break part 2: December 19th 2012 - January 8th 2013

12-19-2012

Woke up to my niece laughing (one of the toddler laughs that sounds more like screeching). I played with her for a little bit, Izzati and I wanted to do something but, we had to wait for my host mom to get back from Solo (works there sometimes). I felt a little sick but it was not unusual, my stomach hurt pretty often. We decided that we wanted to go see a movie. My host mom got home and we took her taxi to Trans Studio. We bought tickets for the Hobbit and then we ate lunch. I had beef and rice, the restaurant gave us chips that we very good and when we ran out I asked if they would refill our bowl. Another bonus of being a white person in Indonesia, when you speak Indonesian and ask for something people typically give it to you because they are super impressed. We walked around the mall and when it was about time we headed to the movie theater. My stomach was hurting worse now but I still wasn't too concerned. When I started feeling cold I knew something was wrong, I never feel cold. We watched the movie and I had a hard time concentrating. I was in a lot of pain, my temperature shot up and my stomach hurt but I refused to leave the movie. I assumed the movie was only going to be an hour and a half but it wouldn't end. They put extra things into the movie that weren't in the book and even though it had SEVERAL opportunities to end it didn't. When it did end and we left the theater I could barely walk I was so dizzy. I drank a bottle of water and we sat down on a bench and waited for my host mom to pick us up. At first I just wanted to go home but, I wasn't getting any better so I consented to go to the hospital. The mall security wheeled me out of the mall and I laid down in the back seat of my Mom's car. Traffic is the worse, I have no idea how long I was in the car but I was miserable. My family tried to cool me down with wet tissues but it was really useless. When we finally did get to the hospital I was but on a bed and rolled into a curtained off room. The nurses took my temperature and asked questions in fast Indonesian (I had told my family the answers to all important questions while in the car and my family's English is very good). They put an IV in me and I was very good about it even though I am normally not good with needles and nurses. They started pumping water into me at an alarming rate and soon I had to go to the bathroom. The nurse wheeled me to the bathroom and suggested that she come in with me and I told her that was not necessary. I went to the bathroom and went back to bed. They waited for my blood tests to come back before they moved me into a more permanent room. I had barely sat down in my new room when they moved me into another room. Time became very fuzzy. I had to go to the bathroom more times than I car to count because of the IV and no one had told me how to hold my hand with the IV in it so my IV filled with blood. The nurse had to get the blood out because it was affecting the IV. Aunt Melly wined the whole time while they were working on the needle in my hand, I am more used to adults being calm in such situations. The nurse tried and failed many different ways to clean the IV and eventually she just replaced the tube. Afterward she told me that I was not allowed to go to the bathroom by myself, I told Melly, who probably translated this into something nicer "I will go to the bathroom with someone when Hell freezes over, I am not a dying old man that has to pee in a pan." I fell into a fitful sleep woken up every couple of hours with bathroom visits and nurses taking tests.

12- 20-2012

I woke up in the hospital for the first time in my memory. I am a very stubborn person especially when it comes to going to the doctor. I haven't been forced to go to the hospital since I was a little kid. Aunt Melly was sleeping in the chair next to me, she had spent the night. I was ready to get out. A nurse shot antibiotics into my IV, she did it really fast. At this point I had to feeds into my IV (1 water and 1 bottle of antibiotics) and the stupid nurse shot the liquid at full blast from the syringe. I screamed, she joking commented "Pelan, pelan" or "Slowly, slowly". I was very close to slapping her in the face. My hand never stopped hurting. I expressed discomfort and said that I would like the IV out, the nurses told me that I should wait until the antibiotics finished... it was a new bottle and I knew it would take hours. I put up with the pain for a while and then I told them to take it out. They protested and said that they would have to put the IV in the other hand and that I needed it, I told them that I would not let them put another IV in me and that I could take the medicine. Finally they agreed to take it out. The doctor visited and told me that I would have to stay another night. I told my family that I wanted to check out of the hospital but they wouldn't let me. Sometime in the last couple of hours I got an email to my mom to try to prevent her from hearing that I was in the hospital via Facebook. I was not happy. People kept telling me to eat and drink and no one would let me get out of bed for anything except for going to the bathroom. I discovered blood on the floor, I hope it was mine (not sure) and it stayed there until the next day. Total boredom. I officially hate hospitals. I threatened to call 911 and the US Embassy and report abuse. I have never wanted to come home more than I did while I was in the hospital. I kept thinking that in America I would be given pills, a water bottle and sent on my way, I cannot forgive Indonesia for making me stay in the hospital. None of my visitors brought games for me to play and most barely talked to me. They only wanted to know if I still had diarrhea and they wanted to play doctor. My Said proudly told me that his Australian brother-in-law was in town and he had Diarrhea too, but he didn't have to go to the hospital because Mr. Said was able to treat him. I tried to explain that I deal with diarrhea all the time and it was the severe dehydration that was the problem because it made my temperature get very high (I don't know how high it got). I ate a very good lunch with Aunt Melly downstairs, another universal truth is that hospital food sucks (I was able to get potatoes, not rice for my daily meals in the hospital). Much to my dismay I had to sleep in the hospital again, this time I told everyone that I would be fine alone and no one stayed with me. At about midnight I got a huge craving for Pringles. I grabbed my wallet and went downstairs before someone could stop me. The store was closed, I never did get my Pringles.

12-21-2012

Woke up at 5 in a hospital all alone. The nurses went through all of their tests and I was able to speak Indonesian to them. I waited and waited. The doctor came in and asked me a few questions, then he said that I was free to leave. By 8 I had all the paperwork I needed to leave but I didn't have a family to come and get me. Izzati was getting her grades at school and my host family was occupied doing that. I was not able to actually leave the hospital until 2:30. The final bill for 2 nights in the hospital and lots of medicine I could take at home if I needed it turned out to be 110 dollars. Insurance paid for everything. The way home took forever... traffic at its worse. We stopped at a mall near out house because some of the roads were closed and Izzati and I walked home in the rain. When we got home we opened the door to find three inches of water everywhere in the house. The rest of the afternoon was spent de-flooding the house. I feel bad for other people in Bandung that were even more flooded than we were. We had pizza to celebrate our hard work and I fell asleep almost instantly.

12-22-2012

It was a weekend so my host Dad was home, I had not really talked to him before this. He is very nice and I wish he was at home more. I spent the morning resting, I had just gotten out of the hospital and my family wanted to make sure I acted the part. There was not one hour that went by when my faithful Mom wouldn't tell me to drink more water and to eat more food. For lunch the whole family went to a sushi restaurant. I was still feeling queasy and did not want to challenge my stomach with raw fish and the food was very expensive and I would have felt bad if I ordered something and was unable to finish it. I ended up letting my mom order Japanese pasta and beef for me. I ate almost all of it. Just in case you are wondering I am still going to the bathroom every thirty minutes, which makes traffic fairly miserable. The rest of the day I just relaxed and putted off writing my journal.

12-23-2012

Today I got an email from my mom that said she had exciting college news. When I Skyped her she said that not only did I get into the University of South Carolina they decided to give me a scholarship. The university awarded me in-state tuition. Out-of-state tuition is about 26,000 dollars a year; Instate is 10,000 and they will give me at least 2,000 dollars extra every year meaning that I will only pay 8,000 dollars a year (pretty good for a great American school).  I have been accepted into University of South Carolina, University of North Florida and Auburn. I am still waiting on Brigham Young University (Utah) and Florida State University. My application for BYU has a hiccup, they do not have my high school transcript even though I have already sent it, I fear that I will not be accepted because of this.
The rest of the day was spent relaxing and watching movies.

Christmas Eve!
Nothing like what I would have done in America. I went to lunch with Izzati and her friends. we went to Sushi and this time I actually ate it. We ate tons of Sushi including: tuna rolls, salmon rolls, salmon belly, a crispy roll (crab meat) and a baby octopus. It was really good, I didn't eat as much as everyone else but, I liked it. There were four of us and we at 40 dollars worth of sushi. I wouldn't be surprised if the meal would cost over a hundred dollars in America, maybe more. I probably won't eat sushi all the time but, it might be nice every once and a while. The most disappointing thing about today was the fact that I did not get any Christmas Pajamas. Living half-way across the world really makes you realize that the most important part of Christmas is family.

12-25-2012

CHRISTMAS DAY!!!
I slept in, and spent the morning in a kind of daze. It wasn't really Christmas. I went over to the Said's house because Mr. Said is Christian and every year they have a family get together. I was there very early and I spent the time eating and taking to relatives. One of my uncles is Australian and I talked a lot to him about why I was here and his job. He is a cleaner for a coal mining company in Australia and he explained to me how that worked. Talking to new people is fun especially if they have an amazing accent. At 6, I was able to Skype my family and watch them open presents for Christmas morning. I miss them and I love them. For the party tons of family came over and I don't think that they are all Christian. We prayed, read the first six verses of Luke (not exactly the Christmas story, just says that Caesar taxed everyone) then we ate. There was so much food. I ate rice, cheesy potatoes, sate, pasta and many other things. According to Indonesian manners the guests should eat first, everyone still thinks of me as a guest and I hate going first all the time. This time my Australian Uncle went first and I went second. For dessert we had 'fruit juice' which was more like fruit soup with chunks of Jell-O and fruit in it and cheesecake. We sang two Christmas songs and then we sang random pop songs. It was very nice of the Said family to invite me over. Lae from Belgium was also there and we talked for a long time in our own mix of English and Indonesian. Lae and I spent the night. We woke up late and ate breakfast. I went back to bed after breakfast because I was still tired. Lae woke me up to say goodbye and she left. I ate lunch and Mr. Said took me home in the afternoon. It was good to be home again.

12-27-2012

Relaxation! Don't ask me why I didn't write my blog, I just didn't want to.

12-28-2012

Today I took an Angkot with Izzati. We went to a mall that I have never been to before to see a movie. We bought the tickets and then went to lunch. We looked around and decided on Wendy's but when we went inside the prices were very expensive and we wanted a lot of food. So instead we went to the Kiosk, an Indonesian restaurant that features several different stations and cooks and you can order from one spot. This Kiosk also had Clemens, which is an American food chain. The food was less expensive than Wendy's and it was much better. I ate crispy chicken, which was fried chicken with cornflakes on it. It was delicious and I ate everything on my plate. After lunch we met up with one of Izzati's friends and we went to the movie. It was my first Indonesian movie!!! Habibie & Ainun, it was about one of the Presidents of Indonesia and his wife who had cancer. There were no English subtitles, in case you were wondering but I understood most of the movie. The President was famous for building planes in Indonesia so, of course I didn't catch all of that terminology but I got the idea. I felt like this was a major accomplishment, being able to understand a movie that was in a completely new language. I know most exchange students have already gotten to this point but Indonesians don't dub movies and so it is hard to find a movie with Indonesian being spoken (that is worth watching). YAAA!!!

12-29-2012

My host Dad was back in town. Izzati wanted to hang out with her friends so I got to spend some quality time with my host parents in the car. We compared animal sounds and laughed at each other. I insisted that a lion does indeed say "ROAR" not whatever weird noise they gave it. And they insisted that a gun says "dor dor" not "bang". Culture is a funny thing. There was a lot of traffic because of the holiday. People from Jakarta love coming to Bandung on vacation, which means on holidays Bandung is flooded with extra people. I have found that a great way to make friends in Bandung is by saying "Jakarta is the worst, I love Bandung. People from Jakarta always come to Bandung during the holiday and we have lots of traffic!" Anyway, we finally got to our destination which was had a bookstore, better than a bookstore, an English bookstore! I was going to buy the Life of Pi and a Nicholas Sparks book because they said they were 50% off. When I went to pay I found out that they weren't on sale so I just bought The Life of Pi. Afterward we went to an international supermarket. Apparently it is a shopping center that is popular with expatriates. We bought lots of food and my host mom insisted that I pick out stuff. We ate a lunch that consisted of Sate, fried noodles, some spicy vegetable thing that was really good and rice. Yum! The food was so good and I ate lots. After lunch we went to PVJ (mall) to meet Izzati. The traffic wasn't too bad getting there but I swear we spent an hour stuck in the parking lot looking for a spot. Uhg.. traffic. I walked around the mall with Izzati and her friend and they ate at a Indonesian restaurant. I wasn't too hungry so I just ordered a small thing of Tofu that was cooked in a special sauce. Getting out of the parking lot at the end of the night was even worse. We got home very late and I went to bed.

All of my family was home for the day including; Izzati, my two older sister, and one of my sister's husband and daughter. The house it pretty small but, it was fun to have a super close knit family. One of my older sisters wanted to go see a movie so Izzati and I took an Angkot to meet her at the theater. When we got there all the seats were taken except for the very first row. So we met up and drove to another mall, we barely got there in time. I missed the first couple of minutes. It was 5 cm, an Indonesian movie about 6 friends who climb a mountain. I was really tired and they were talking fast and using slang. Needless to say I didn't understand all of it and most of the time I just made up my own words. The pictures of the mountain were very pretty and I was able to get something from the film. I have decided that I want to climb that mountain. It is the highest mountain in Java and it is also an active volcano (only puffs smoke). If the point of exchange is to do crazy things that you have never done before and probably will never do again, then this is my chance.

NEW YEAR'S EVE!!
Pretty normal day, I watched movies with the family, played with Misha (niece) and just hung around the house. My family didn't stay up or celebrate but I think it is something to be able to end the year in a completely new country with a new family, speaking a new language and it feels normal. I would not change anything this year! I am so glad that I was able to graduate high school come to Indonesia and be where I am right now. Last December 31st I had no idea what I was getting into and I had no idea where I would be in one year. Time sure does fly.

And, I found out recently that there will be a girl from Florida coming to Indonesia next year. Good Luck!

Selamat Baru Tahun!
Happy New Year!!!!

1/2/2013  and 1/3/2013

Relaxed! I wrote my New Year resolutions and tried to get sleep. I also started reading The Life Of Pi . I also succeded in not writing a journal. On the 3rd I packed for my trip to Solo.

1/4/2013

I woke up at 4:30. I took a shower, got dressed and finished getting ready for our trip to Solo. My Mom is working on a house in Solo and she goes there occasionally. I have a friend that lives there and I wanted to visit her, Solo is also very close to Yogyakarta (known at Jogja). Jogja has tons of ancient temples and if you live in Indonesia you have to go there. My family planned a trip and today we were leaving for Solo. We left the house at 6:30 and got on the train at 8. The train ride is nine hours long. I slept a little and I was able to read a lot of my book (The Life Of Pi). About three hours in I was bored and I decided to take a walk to the bathroom. I found out that the toilet is really just a squat potty with a hole in the bottom, where you can see the train tracks below. The bathroom also had a handlebar to help people squat on the moving train. I didn't have to go to the bathroom bad enough to go so I just waited the appropriate amount of time so that people outside wouldn't laugh at me. People think that I can't use squat potties, but I can! I might put that on my résumé "Can use a squat potty like a champ", it shows real determination and flexibility. Anyway, the ride wasn't that bad. I never did go to the bathroom. When we did get to Solo it was raining and rickshaw  (different name in Indonesian) drivers were crowding me trying to get me to get their cart. We pushed threw them and were able to find a taxi, which drove us to the hotel. There was some confusion about meeting Sidney (my exchange student friend in Solo- same Sidney that went on the trip to Belitung) but we finally met up. We went to dinner together and talked. Then we took Sidney home and went back to the hotel. After watching TV for a little while we went to bed.

1/5/2013

Man, Indonesian people wake up early! Normally I can sleep in a little because I have my own room but this morning I was sharing with my sister and mom so, no such luck. My mom left super early and Izzati and I were dressed and downstairs for breakfast at 6. The breakfast was poor and the toaster ate my toast. I called Sidney to tell her that we were coming and that she should get ready. My dad had taken a train from Jakarta to Solo during the night and he arrived early this morning. My dad also rented a driver for the day that would take us to Jogja. We headed off. The drive was only one and a half hours long and the drive wasn't too bad. When we got to Jogja we visited Prambanan  temple. In one word magnificent. The temples were huge and made completely out of stone. We took tons of pictures (including with curious Indonesians). We walked around the temples for a while. It was so hot outside but it was worth it. There was a lot of damage to the temples from an earthquake that hit several years before hand, I hope that people are able to preserve the temples so that there is no further damage. After Prambanan, we went to one of my mom's friend's hotels and batik factory. If I haven't made this clear yet, Batik is a type of traditional art that is done on fabric. It can either be made into clothes or it can be hung on the wall for decoration. The place made batik clothes and they were beautiful but they were also very expensive because they are made using the extremely long traditional process. I choose not to buy anything because I knew we were going shopping later and I didn't want to spend all of my money. When we were done socializing we went to lunch at a famous restaurant that is owned by a Banci (transvestite). I ordered Fried Rice and it was really good. Then, we went to a palace and took a tour the tour included a Batik air gallery. The guide explained the basic steps of making batik. First the artist uses pencil on a piece of wax paper, they then use the paper sketch to trace the pattern on the fabric, next the trace the pattern in wax. They paint the rest of the picture and dye the fabric. When they are done they boil the material to get the wax off and the parts are left white. It is beautiful and defiantly an art form. I bought one of the paintings. The man selling them gave use the "Indonesian" price because my sister and dad were with us and we talked in Indonesian. He did show us the "tourist" prices which were more than double. He also gave us a discount on the good prices and we left feeling like we weren't  ripped off. Malioboro, was the next place we went to. It is a very famous street that sells tons of souvenirs and it is known for being very cheap. I bought lots of gifts and we looked around some of the stores before returning to the car. The driver took us to a little park that has two trees in it. Legend says that if you can walk in-between the two trees your love life will improve. I was able to get through the trees on my second try (you get 3 tries). So congrats to me! Then we rented a cart that we could peddle around the park. The steering wheel was in the back but, we didn't hit anything. After the park we started the drive home. We stopped at Sidney's house to pick up her things,  we bought pizza and went to the hotel. We watched movie and talked all night.

1/6/2013

We woke up tired because apparently we didn't go to bed until 2 am. At least we were allowed to sleep in a little. When we did get up we ate breakfast and waited to be told what to do. Sidney's host mom sent their driver to come pick us up then we went to their house and talked for a little while. Sidney's host Mom decided that she wanted to show us around Solo so we all got into the car. I don't really remember where we went I just know that we were in the car for an absurd amount of time. First we went to a museum that taught us about the Java man and evolution. then we drove two hours to get chicken soup and rice. After lunch we went to the mountain. We drove for a very long time. Sidney and I talked most of the time and at one point we were laughing so hard we were crying because we didn't know why we were still in the car. When we finally got to Solo again we dropped off Sidney and I said goodbye. Then we went to KFC to pick up dinner and then to the train station. The train left the station at 8:30 and we rode the train all night long.

Talking to other exchange students is very enjoyable.

1/7/2013

The train finally arrived at 6am, an hour behind schedule. I slept a little on the train but it was restless. It should have been my first day of school but, when we got home my mom decided that I didn't have to go to school because I was so tired. I slept from 10 to 1 pm, awesome nap. I also caught up on email, Facebook and I finished The Life Of Pi, it was an awesome book by the way.

1/8/2013

First day of school. I had to wake up early and put on my school uniform for the first time in almost a month. I had the morning ceremony, culture class and then Indonesian class, which was canceled so I went to the library. I sat down in the library and I started typing. I have now been typing all day. Stupid Journal! Or maybe Stupid Me for putting off 1 month of journals! Whatever, I briefly paused to move rooms to my Digital drawing class room, then back to the library, then I had Angklung practice and then back to the library again. When I got home I took a short break. I don't even want to know how many pages I typed today.

Winter Break Part 1: December 10th 2012 - December 18th 2012

12.10.2012

OK everyone it has been days since I last posted and this time it was actually a good reason. I was busy. So I am warning you now this is going to be a long blog. Really long (Avery you should read this after school or you might be late). I went to school today. When I got there I realized that exams were still going on so I sat in the library for 2 hours and then I walked home. Today I had a Rotary Presentation. I wasn't sure what I should talk about so I put together a short PowerPoint and decided that I could speak enough Indonesian to get me through the presentation. After I finished my PowerPoint I started packing (moving host families tomorrow). I spent the rest of the day hanging out and waiting until I had to leave to give my presentation. I was late to the meeting because there was some confusion with the driver but, when I got there they hadn't even started yet. I don't know if I will ever like "Indonesian standard time" especially because I had dinner plans with my family and I didn't want to be late. When we finally did start the Rotarians did the opening exercises, which includes singing the Indonesian national Anthem and the Rotary theme. Before I went to an Indonesian Rotary meeting I didn't know Rotary had a song but, leave it to Indonesians to sing as often as possible. Lae from Belgium and I are in the same club and we were both going to do our presentations. I had two presentations, one was all about myself and my family that I made in Florida and one was the very quick thing I put together about my time in Indonesia. I went first and I still had no idea what they wanted (not because I didn't ask.. I did ask at least 5 times). So I just went though both presentations. People in Indonesia can be very rude, it is not impolite to talk when others are talking. It only took me 10-15 minutes and throughout my presentation almost no one was listening to me. I would love to put the people in my Host Rotary club in the same position. Someday I will have them present a presentation (they won't know what the subject should be), in a language they have only been learning for 4 months and then talk throughout their entire presentation. I don't think they understand how frustrating it is. I loved my sponsor Rotary club in Florida, the people talked to me, the meetings started (and ended) on time and the people were considerate (unless you want to play a game - then you should run as fast as you can from the Ponte Vedra Sunset Club). I wish I could say that I go to Rotary because I just love the people and I want to be there but I really just go for my allowance. When Lae got up they were even more rude. Lae has a strong French accent and sometimes her Indonesian is hard to understand, this resulted in giggling and laughing throughout her presentation. After Lae finished I wanted to leave because I was going to be late to dinner. I told Aunt Melly but she told me to wait our President than proceeded to talk for 30 minutes. At this point the driver was calling me to tell me that he was already here and wanting to know if I would be done anytime soon. Finally the meeting ended and I go up as fast as I could to leave but I was not quite fast enough. I was snagged for the photo. While we were getting ready for the photo this old man kept calling me Julia Roberts. "Oh.. Julia Roberts.... oh Julia Roberts" The same old man had said the same thing before the meeting and keep teasing me even though I had corrected him. I was done I shouted "MY NAME IS ALAINA ROBERTS. A-L-A-I-N-A ROBERTS! NOT JULIA ROBERTS." Maybe this was a little bit of an overreaction but I had had enough crap for the day. We quickly took a picture and I left without saying goodbye to anyone. When I got downstairs the driver was waiting, he got the car and I got in. He asked me why I was so late and why I didn't answer my phone and I just apologized. I should not have been surprised to find that even though I was 45 minutes later than I said I would be my Mom and Dad were not home yet. Typical. To celebrate my last night in their house, my host family took me to a very nice restaurant up the mountain. The best part of being on the mountain is being able to look down at the city of Bandung in the Valley. We took lots of pictures. It was very, very nice of my host family to take me to the restaurant. My food was excellent and I ate tons. When everyone finished eating we drove home and sung along to the Radio. I went to bed happy with my first Host family and disappointed with my Host Rotary Club.

I have been blessed with the greatest First host family ever! I am so glad that I could spend 4 months in their house. I will never forget them and I cannot thank them enough for everything that they have taught me. I entered their house without knowing almost any Indonesian and I have left confident in the language. Thank you, thank you, Thank you!

12.11.2012

I woke up, to my First Host Mom hugging me. She was in tears and was telling me that I had to Skype her and talk to her all the time. I went back to sleep and when I woke up again I got ready to move host families and then waited. I called my first host family at around 9 AM and they said they would pick me up at 6 PM. So, I watched TV, ate food and I waited. I waited for a long time. I was already packed and I was completely ready so I didn't really have much to do. At 5 PM I was woken up from my nap by Aunt Melly. She said that she was here to pick me up. She was tired after driving so long to get to the my house. I took pictures of the house but for some reason my camera was being very weird and wasn't working very well. We left for my 2nd Host Family and I was excited to be moving. I arrived at my new house after sitting in traffic for 1 and a half hours. My host family was waiting for me and my host sister gave me a quick tour of the house. My host sister Izzati went to Wisconsin last year and her English might be better than mine. The house is small but it has a coziness  to it that I like. My host Mom ordered Pizza for dinner and it was super good. I don't get to eat plain cheese pizza that is still warm very often and I enjoyed every bite. After Pizza, Izzati talked for hours. My host Mom came over and told my sister that we should be speaking Indonesian and I promised that we would start tomorrow. I can't even summarize what we talked about it ranged from a wide variety of topics including Indonesian relationships (2 months of dating before hand holding is appropriate) and how awesome Disney World is. I can tell you that not a single one of the "first night questions" we asked. When we finally decided to call it a night I started unpacking. I successfully unpacked all of my crap and found places for everything. I went to bed tired and happy with my progress in my second host family.

I know that it is a huge deal to open your house up to a complete stranger and I am thankful that my 2nd Host Family was willing to take that chance. I already know that I am going to love my new family.

12.12.2012

I had to wake up early this morning, even though I was up very late. I woke up and packed for my trip to Belitung (Optional Rotary trip) and for Aunt Melly's Birthday. For her birthday Melly invited Leti, Lea and I to play with her all day and then to spend the night at a hotel. Aunt Melly told me that she would pick me up at about 10 AM, so I was ready for 11 (Indonesian time). It turns out that Melly and Leti hit traffic on the way to my house. What I cannot understand is that there is always traffic but people almost never leave time for getting stuck in traffic. When they finally got to my house it was about 12, which means that there was no reason that I should have woken up so early. When Aunt Melly got there I hurried into the car and we drove to Trans Studio. The traffic was bad and it took us a while to get there. At Trans Studio we went to Pizza Hut, which is actually a nice restaurant in Indonesia. We ate tons of cheese and bread and pizza and then we had ice cream for dessert that was covered in cookie crumbles, chocolate chips and Chocolate sauce. Lunch was amazing, the only problem was that Lae was having problems getting to Trans Studio. We headed to the other side of town to the hotel that we would be spending the night at. We checked in and shortly afterward Lae showed up. We took a little break and then we went to another restaurant for a Rotary meeting that Aunt Melly said she had to go to. She told us that we would be there for only 20 minutes tops. 40 minutes latter we were finally leaving. I just love Indonesian time. From the restaurant we dropped a lady off at her house and then went back to trans studio. We were planning on watching a movie but there weren't any good movies so we just went to dinner. Aunt Melly's real son came and we had a cake and sung happy birthday. I saw a CD store next to the restaurant and I was able to buy a Christmas CD there. After dinner we went to the hotel next to the mall so that Aunt Melly could Skype he Brazilian exchange student son. She talked to him for a while. The three of us girls played around and waited for her to finish. When she was finally done we went to BIP, another mall, to see if we could see a movie there. At this point it was pretty late and there were not any more movies. To make up for my disappointment I ran down the up escalator (twice) and I also ran down a elevated walkway with Leti. When I got to the bottom there was a lady who was just staring at us so I hurriedly said "Permisi bu" which means "Excuse me, Ms." It was super fun just to be crazy and run around. In the car Aunt Melly took off her head scarf and I stole it. I put it on and then walked through the hotel with the head dress. We went up the room, ate cake and went crazy. Leti had a ton of Brazilian dance music and she taught us how to dance. We danced for hours until we were so tired that we had to go to bed at about 1am. It was an awesome day!

12.12.2012 Highlight

I have always wanted to learn how to dance and I did awesome tonight. Unfortunately I can only dance to Brazilian music after severe sleep deprivation. SO do not expect me to ever dance again.

12.13.2012

I woke up in the hotel, still tired from dancing all night long. We had breakfast downstairs and it was amazing. They had everything! It really is worth it to stay in an 'international' hotel because they like to pander to 'international clients', which means I didn't eat rice for breakfast. We all ate tons of food then we went upstairs packed up and checked out. First, we dropped Lae off at her house then Aunt Melly and Leti came with me to my house so that I could pick up a couple things that I forgot for my trip to Belitung. It took me less than a minute to collect the things that I wanted and then we were out on the road again. Traffic in Indonesia is the worst. We had already spent most of the morning sitting in a car. I was going to take travel (what Indonesians call a car that you hire to take you to a city that also takes several other people to the same city) and I had to be at the station at 1:30. So before we went to the travel station we stopped at a small mall to eat lunch. After lunch I successfully got on travel and headed off to Jakarta. I was traveling alone and to say goodbye to me Aunt Melly and Leti drove their car next to the travel van and waved to me. I really love Leti and Aunt Melly. I think one thing that I have learned more about in Indonesia is patience. The drive to Jakarta is 3hours long and when I got to Jakarta I waited for my ride (that I didn't know). When my transit host family did come we drove to their house (about 40 minutes). I thanked the family and took my stuff upstairs to the guest room. I wasn't hungry and I really just wanted to sleep. I was about to go to sleep when the power went out, which didn't bother me. But, many people in Indonesia are scared of the dark and they refuse to sleep in the dark. So my transit host parents sent up the maid and their two children to keep me company. The maid brought a candle and the kids wanted to play. I taught them how to play B.S., we played B.S. then we played an Indonesian card game. The youngest son was sad because he kept losing so he said "I wish we has Uno cards" and it just so happened that I had Uno cards in my purse (the normal card we were previously playing with were also mine). I got out the Uno cards and we started playing. I did terrible, they play by a different set of rules and I kept getting really bad hands. By the end of our 2nd game of Uno the lights went back on. Then we played pick-up-sticks, I was the clear winner at this game and each round I had twice as many as my two younger competitors combined. After losing they decided that they need to go to bed because they had school the next day. I said goodnight and I was almost asleep when my transit host family knocked on my door again. It was time to take pictures. We took pictures everywhere they could think of and with several pieces of the Father's toy car collection. The little girl was so embarrassed she kept begging her parents to be done with pictures but they kept pressing on. I am used to smiling for a ridiculous amount of pictures so, I wasn't bothered. But, after flipping through an entire book about North America, I was really tired. I suggested that the girl needed to go to bed because she had school tomorrow and the parents quickly agreed and the family let me go to sleep.

Playing cards with my new friends :)

12.14.2012

I woke up with the prayer calls at 4:30, got ready and headed downstairs. We had to leave at 5 in order to get to the airport on time. It was a very long drive. My 'transit family' was awesome and I can't thank them enough for driving me so far so early in the morning. The driver dropped me off at the airport at 7 and I was alone. I didn't know what gate I should be at or when my flight was leaving, I just knew that I was going with Rotary and they arranged my plane ticket. After waiting alone for about 10 minutes the boy from Germany (Eric) showed up. One of the nice things about being the only two white people at an airport is the ability to find each other easily. Eric didn't have much more information than I did but, at least we weren't alone. We talked and waited until Eric got a call from Alejandro's (Boy from Colombia) host mom and we meet to eat Breakfast. The others didn't come until about 9:30. They explained the reason that I was dropped off so early was that the traffic in Jakarta is so bad that I would be stuck in it for hours if I didn't leave the house at 5. Whatever. I was surprised to find that there were only six students: myself, Sidney (Minnesota), Sam (Around Chicago), Oguzhan (Around Chicago), Eric (Germany), Alejandro (Colombia). We also has Mas Indra, Pa Wasito and Pa Wasito's wife. Instantly we were great friends. When we finally got on the plane we were so excited for the trip. The flight was short, only about one hour. We arrived in Belitung and after taking a thousand photos our trip started. This was the first time that Rotary had taken a trip to Belitung and so they rented a travel company that would drive us everywhere. We checked into the hotel, changed and headed out to the beach. The beach was beautiful and it had large boulders that we spent the next several hours climbing. While we were swimming out to a group of rocks I stepped on something and got a splinter. Sidney and I realized that we were truly the only girls when she shouted out "I have bandages" and I said that I had Neosporin. But, or medical kits were at the hotel and it didn't hurt too bad. When we got to the rocks we climbed all over them. At one point we saw a large lizard and tried to get its attention by pointing at it and taking photos. Later Sidney did research and the lizard is called a water monitor and it is the second largest lizard in the world, it can swim and it is extremely powerful. So in retrospect - teasing the big lizard was probably a bad idea. After exploring everything we could Sam and I set our eyes on a set of rocks in the middle of the ocean. Throughout the trip I became the 'Florida girl that all the stupid mid-westerns ask questions to because they know nothing about the ocean'. Sam asked me if I thought it was a good idea to swim out to the rocks and I said that it would be ok and that they probably weren't that far away. Anyway, I am a fairly competent swimmer and I was sure I wouldn't have a problem. Sam and I talked and swam for a long time. It was defiantly farther than we thought it was and when we got 80 percent of the way there we realized that there weren't any small rock that we could use to climb up and that there was no way on the boulders. We were forced to turn around. Luckily Sam is a strong swimmer, otherwise we would have been in trouble. Eventually we found a sand bar that we could at least stand up on an rest for a minute, which is where I got my second splinter of the day. (Mind you no one else got a splinter). When we made it back to shore we didn't know where everyone went and we estimated that we had been swimming for about 45 minutes. We walked around and saw that the driver was still there so, the group hadn't left us. When we did find everyone they said that they watched us look for them for a while before they came up. We had ice cream and loaded back into the van. We drove to a dock and walked all the way down. It was the perfect place to watch the sunset. I have never seen anything so beautiful. The six of us sat and talked about random things until the sun went down and then we went to dinner. We went to a Chinese restaurant and ate Crabs. It was embarrassing because I had never eaten crabs before and the 'stupid mid-westerns' had to teach me how to eat seafood. Dinner was a battle and there we severe casualties on both sides my crab lost and it ended up ripped to shreds and splattered all over my plate but I ended up with the title "dirtiest hands" and with a still unsatisfied stomach. When we got back to the hotel we decided that we wanted to go for a night swim at the beach that was just across the street. We never told the Rotarians where we were going and they didn't seem to care. We walked to where we thought the beach was but it wasn't there. I know that makes no sense but, it really wasn't there, after walking along the beach for a while we realized that the tide must be very extreme and that is why we couldn't see the water. We tried to salvage the trip by buying Martabak (traditional Indonesian cake) but, when we asked a nearby worker where we could buy it they just kept saying "mengarti" (Understand) , we were speaking Indonesian but apparently the man was in shock and didn't want to talk with us. We returned to the hotel unsuccessful but undeterred. We decided to swim in the pool instead. Eric had a soccer ball and I wouldn't give it back to him. Something that everyone should put on their bucket list is annoying a German. So fun. He tried to fight me for the ball but had the moral issue of hurting a girl, I was just having fun. By the way laughing makes it hard to hold your breath while being dunked underwater. After a long struggle I gave him the ball. We went to bed very late.

Sam's Hippie Commune. We talked a lot throughout the weekend about this hypothetical island that Sam and a couple of other people would live on. We discussed everything including what type of island would be best, what we would be allowed to bring to the island and how we would get food. It is a really fun scenario to talk about and it never gets old. There is always more to talk about.

12-15-2012

Sidney and I woke up to Sam knocking on our hotel door. Apparently everyone was ready and waiting on us. No one told us to wake up and our hotel room didn't have any windows so, we had no idea. Sidney and I were ready and downstairs in 5 minutes, which surprised the boys. We jumped into the van an were on our way. We drove to a beach and got on a small boat that would take us to other small islands. One of the best things about Belitung, that cannot be said about the rest of Indonesia, is that it is empty. Most people are locals and even though there is tourism it is tiny compared to the amount of people that go to Bali. Fewer people and a tourism economy would explain why everything was so clean. One of the major problems in Indonesia is the pollution, people just throw trash everywhere and it was nice to escape from that. The boat ride was about twenty minutes and it was gorgeous. The first island had a lighthouse and when we got there a wedding was going on. Exploring = best thing ever. Together we swam out to a small island close by. There were rocks and crabs and we tried to see everything. At one point Sidney cut herself on a rock and she was panicking that a shark would come. I had to explain that sharks don't like human blood and that she would be ok. When we returned to the original island we ate, while I was eating a cat decided to adopt me and wouldn't leave me alone. After lunch we went back on the boat and snorkeled. We used bread to attract fish. There were thousands of fish and we were in the middle of a huge coral reef. I don't know if any other reef can compare. Beautiful. When the guide called us back to the boat we were reluctant to leave. On the boat we traveled to island number two. This island was much bigger. We walked around part of it and we found a coconut tree. We decided that we should try to get a coconut down, it took a while and a lot of effort but they finally got it. I was being eaten by mosquitoes and so I left before they got the coconut down. I found a sand dollar (which was exciting because my beach in Florida doesn't have them very often and I have never found a whole one). Eric and Alejandro found tiny starfish and we let them crawl all over us. We only stayed at this island for an hour and then we rode to island number three. At this point all of the exchange students we sitting on the roof of the boat because we could and because it was something we would never be allowed to do in America. Island three can really only be called a sandbar. There was a circular patch of sand about ten feet in diameter. We took pictures and then snorkeled around the island. I was floating around when I saw a tiny crab pop up a big crab followed quickly snatched the smaller crab and then disappeared into the sand again. The whole struggle was over in five seconds. I found another sand dollar, but it broke. The other thing on the island was a type of huge starfish and we hunted for them in the water. I was unable to find any but, I did find tons of tiny starfish. We had to leave after thirty minutes because the guides were worried about getting stuck in sand. For dinner we went to a small local place. The food was ok but it didn't matter because we were all so hungry. We stopped to buy snacks on the way home and talked about playing cards but all of us were exhausted. We went to bed.

Translation error:
What we heard "Kita makan ikan" - "We will eat fish"
What the guide actually said "Kita kasih makan ikan" -"We will give food to fish"
We were all excited about eating fresh fish but it turns out feeding the fish was even better.

We woke up, wandered downstairs and lazily ate breakfast. All of us were sunburned, we were so excited to be in the sun again and be tan that we didn't put sunscreen on- terrible mistake. Breakfast was good. Nobody told Sidney and I that we were checking out of the hotel right now and that we should pack so we had to run upstairs and pack before we could leave. When everyone was ready we climbed into the van (much more difficult with sunburn). We stopped by a small restaurant and had a traditional dish. All of the exchange students had already eaten so we all split one bowl. Our definitions of sanitation and cleanliness have defiantly changed. We all used the same fork and it didn't even bother us, exchange changes people. We drove some more until we got to a small store where we bought oleh-oleh (snacks and souvenirs to give to friends when you come back from vacation -typically traditional foods of the area). Pa Wasito gave us money to buy it (which is reasonable when you know how much we paid for the trip). Back in the car and off to a museum. The highlight of the museum was a baby cat and its protective mother. We also decided to make our own stories up for the displays because they were boring and we couldn't read the explanations. Outside the museum had the crocodiles which brought a whole conversation about how only crazy people live in Florida. We were all in tons of pain. There is a definite shift in the photos from all touching each other and having arms raised in excitement to standing eight inches away from the person next to you and trying not to touch. We had lunch at the same place that we had eaten Crab. It was delicious, all of us ate tons of food. The Rotarians had to keep ordering more food and water to feed us. After lunch we had to go to the airport, it was time to leave paradise. Airport security in Indonesia is nothing compared to America. Our plane was late because it was raining so we turned around one of the benches and we played cards (using our suitcases as a table). When we finally got to board the plane I couldn't find my boarding pass for a minute. Luckily I was able to find it and I was able to get on the plane with my friends. We were in the air for no more than thirty minutes when a lady came on the intercom. I wasn't listening the first time so I didn't catch it (You have to listen to the Indonesian because the 'English" is beyond poor). The second time we all listened and discovered that because of 'bad weather' we couldn't land in Jakarta and we had to land on another island. We landed, waited for at least an hour and then took off again. The next day I found out from my host sister that something went wrong with the Jakarta airport, she thinks the radar stopped working. Whatever it was, planes were unable to communicate with the control tower and all flights were shut down for a while. When we finally did get to Jakarta it was very late. I was planning on taking travel back to Bandung but we arrived too late for this to be practical. I spent the night with Sidney at Alejandro's house. I wanted to take a shower. Taking off my clothes with the sunburn was excruciating and my shoulders hurt so much that I just stood in the cold water. I slept poorly, trying not to move or lay on any part of my sunburn.

The morning was almost just as painful as the night before. I woke up, tried to get dressed, ate breakfast, said goodbye to Sidney and left. I went with my transit host mom and brother. We dropped him off at school and then my transit mom took me to find travel. The first one we went to was full and didn't have another van leaving until 1pm, so we went to a second station. They had a van leaving right then and I was able to get a seat. I thanked my transit mom for taking me and letting me spend the night at her house and then I went to Bandung. There is nothing like traveling in Indonesia, you just don't go to the bathroom. The van won't stop and I had to go very bad by the time we finally got to Bandung. My host sister Izzati picked me up at the station. My older host sister was also in the car with her daughter. So I meet another sister and my niece for the first time. They were so nice. We went to brunch, when we got to the restaurant I picked up my niece (about 2) and carried her into the restaurant. I love little kids. Afterward my older host sister told me that Misha (niece) doesn't normally let other people pick her up. We talked and ate for a while. When we got home I had to catch up on my email and Facebook it is amazing what you miss in a couple of days.

Being on Vacation is nice but I really enjoy that feeling of being home. I had just moved into this house and I was able to settle in more today.

Today was just filled with relaxation and healing from my sunburn. I am now peeling profusely. I looked like Rudolf at one point because my nose was so red.
